Medical Expertise

Dr. Griffith received his basic medical education at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona campus between 1995 and 2002. In 2002, he completed an internship at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Jamaica before proceeding with his surgical training in Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery.

Afterwards, he enrolled in the General Surgical Program. This programme lasted from 2004–2009. Based at St. Mary’s Hospital in Imperial Street and Ealing Hospital in South Hall, he developed an interest in Laparoscopic Surgery and undertook an elective as an honorary clinical fellow at Imperial College in London between 2007 and 2008.

UK, Canadian and European Training

Dr. Griffith completed a Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery in the UK, at the University of Strasbourg in 2008. Traveling to Spain for part of his elective, he was mentored by acclaimed Laparoscopic Surgeons at the Hospitals de San Pau in Barcelona, Pamplona University, and the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal in Madrid.

Dr. Griffith was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburg as an honorary fellow in 2005. A Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Alberta was completed from 2010 to 2011, after completing his general surgical training at the Cornwall Regional Hospital. In May of 2012, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery approved his fellowship after reviewing the fellowship year he had just completed.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has long been recognised for its cost-effectiveness. Cutting-edge surgical procedures have also been proven to improve patient satisfaction and recovery.

Lifestyle Diseases

Barbados has witnessed increased numbers of persons suffering from lifestyle disease such as diabetes, to the extent that it is known as the amputation capital of the world. Studies have indicated that Barbados spends approximately 5% of its gross domestic product on the treatment of diabetes and hypertension which are both directly linked to obesity.

Further, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently confirmed that Dominica and Barbados has the 11th and 12th highest overweight countries in the world in terms of percentage of population.

In light of these facts, Surgical Solutions Inc. recognizes the need for alternative care for the reversal of the negative impact of these diseases in Barbados and the Caribbean on a whole.
